With its first episode aired in 1972, Below the Lion Rock 獅子山下 documented the tears and laughter of Hong Kong people during the past half-century. In today's world, the TV series has gained cultural significance and has become a symbol of the Hong Kong spirit. 
Join us for a captivating talk with Calvin Wong, Director and Executive Producer of the series, to talk about how it represents a shared identity. This event will explore the emergence of the TV series during the transitional period of British colonial rule in Hong Kong. Key topics include its role as the cradle of the Hong Kong New Wave—from realism to humanistic values— the show's contribution to writing history on the television screen, and the lasting cultural impact of its iconic theme song, Below the Lion Rock, as a piece of collective memory.

Guest Speaker: 

Calvin Wong previously worked as the director and executive producer of Below the Lion Rock series. He holds a MA in Cinema Studies at New York University. He is also an experienced Executive in Canadian Media.
